chmod never changes the permissions of symbolic links; the chmod
system call cannot change their permissions. This is not a
problem since the permissions of symbolic links are never used.
Fine - so as long as I've ensured that what they point to have rw
permissions I should be ok. Except that I'm not. Thanks for the

Are you a member of the group video or sys ?
If you chown anne:users (or whatever group you belong to) the devices,
are you still not able to open the video device?
