I also use the Gentoo-sources of the kernel and don't have any problems
with GM during compilation. It's most likely that you have crappy
onboard-sound as stated by the other posters. You don't have a VIA
KT-chipset by any chance? It's known to have exactly this problem with
the onboard AC'97 chipset.
