To clarify, here are the relevant lines from my kernel config:
CONFIG_SOUND=m
CONFIG_SOUND_ICH=m
# CONFIG_SOUND_OSS is not set

$ grep audio /etc/modules.conf
post-install soundcore modprobe i810_audio
post-remove soundcore modprobe -r i810_audio
