[GnomeMeeting-list] Sound

Hi

I run SuSE 8 with ALSA v0.9.0rc3 installed. Card is a VIA 82C686A/B at 0xcc00,
irq 10. I use the Gnomeeting version that comes with SuSE 8. I have a Philips
ToUcam USB webcam. I'm trying to get in touch with my son, who uses Windows
XP and NetMeeting. Video is perfect, but in different occasions I've
experienced either

1) no sound at all
2) sound coming only from his side
3) sound coming only from my side.

By the same token, after doing alsaconf, I've had either

A) Audio devices:
    0: VIA 82C686A (DUPLEX)
    1: USB Audio

B) 0: VIA 82C686A (DUPLEX)

C) NO DEVICES ENABLED IN CONFIG

Today's case was number 3 B (sound from my side only, Audio Devices: 0: VIA
82C686A (DUPLEX)).

# lsmod |grep snd gave the following:

snd-pcm-oss 44288 0 (unused)
snd-mixer-oss 12288 0 [snd-pcm-oss]
snd-via686 7844 0
snd-pcm 61728 0 [snd-pcm-oss snd-via686]
snd-timer 11008 0 [snd-pcm]
snd-ac97-codec 26160 0 [snd-via686]

snd-rawmidi 12800 0 [snd-mpu401-uart]
snd-seq-device 3984 0 [snd-rawmidi]
snd 30312 0 [snd-pcm-oss snd-mixer-oss snd-via686
snd-pcm snd-timer snd-ac97-codec snd-mpu401-uart snd-rawmidi snd-seq-device]
usbcore 55136 1 [snd audio pwc usb-uhci]
soundcore 3268 2 [snd audio]

# cat /proc/bus/usb/drivers gave the following:

         usbdevfs
         hub
         Philips webcam
         audio

In case (A):
    0: VIA 82C686A (DUPLEX)
    1: USB Audio
I was able to do cat /dev/dsp1 > /dev/dsp succesfully, i.e. speak and listen
to my voice. Otherwise, cat: /dev/dsp1 gives: No such device.
Should I always install snd-pcm-oss and snd-mixer-oss?

I do not know where the problem lies. Sound in RealPlayer does not work, but
AlsaPlayer and Xmms work perfectly. Any ideas? SuSE provides no help on the
sound issue.

Thanks in advance --and thanks to Damien Sampras for making distance so
marvelously short.
