Hi Wolfgang,
you have to create .desktop file for your executable and put in
respective location e.g. ~/.local/share/applications/. Also, the
desktop file needs to have
"x-scheme-handler/http" in "MimeType" at least.

Hi!
I’m using Ubuntu GNOME 16.04, which contains GNOME 3.18.
The GNOME Control Center allows me to select a web browser under Details
» Default Applications. However, the only choices it offers are browsers
I’ve installed via Ubuntu’s package manager. How can I specify an
arbitrary executable or `*.desktop` file to be used whenever a GNOME
application wants to start a web browser?
All the best,
Wolfgang
