That documentation is outdated. You should not use the
$(datadir)/mime-info and $(datadir)/application-registry directories any
more. You should configure this information according to the Shared MIME
Information and Desktop File specifications on freedesktkop.org.
However, I will still state this is not a solution to the problem. What
will you do when the user installs a theme, and it requires a gtk+
engine that they don't have? Is there some guaranteed offset in the file
that will let you know what type it is from sniffing the data, rather
than basing the information solely on the file extension?
These are all concerns that need to be thought out first. We shouldn't
just implement a feature because a few users want it. It needs to be
designed to work right and not just a workaround for doing it within
the scope of a few existing file formats.
