I think a compromise between the places and the panel variant is a
places control center with an "All" category that shows the "panel" view
in the main part of the window. I've got two screenies of a small GTK#
program where I tried to do something like this:

Naturally, I only chose Mono for prototyping; the actual implementation
could be done nicely with the existing control-center code in gnomecc
which already has a nice panel view. Altering it to only show one
category on demand shouldn't be much of a problem.
