Hi David
Please see my replies below. For future reference, it is probably better to send emails about documentation to gnome-doc-list gnome org (I have CCd that list), although in this case a bug report at https://bugzilla.gnome.org/ against the ‘gdm’ product would have been appropriate also. This change in the location of the session log occurred in GDM 3.5.2, and the documentation was not updated at the same time. I have filed a bug and attached a patch to it:

I have just spent several hours trying to debug my GDM startup and could
not figure out why ~/.xsession-errors would not show my debug output. It
turns out that ~/.xsession-errors had gone away and now GDM is using
~/.cache/gdm/session.log.
https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=688032Once the patch is applied and a release is made which includes the corrections, that file will be automatically updated. There is a 3.6.2 release scheduled for this coming Monday (12th November) which should hopefully include the fix.
This page needs to be updated to reflect these changes.
