Weird; www.gnome.org/start/stable points to the 2.18 page, but
www.gnome.org/start points elsewhere? I can't find any entry in
gnomeweb-wml/www.gnome.org/htaccess in order to update this and am not
sure where else to look. It seems www.gnome.org/start should just be
pointed to www.gnome.org/start/stable, since the latter can be updated
via that svn file.

Is anyone else able to help?

Um, nevermind. For some reason I thought www.gnome.org/start was
pointing to www.gnome.org/start/2.16 rather than being its own
independent page and mentioning GNOME 2.16. Pays to look closer
before I open my mouth.

Should be fixed now, if it updates from svn okay.
