There is actually a good reason why it was doing that :)

The idea is to make the logo in the top left corner clickable, while 
still being able to control the style from the CSS stylesheet.

Since you can only set the background image through CSS, the idea is to 
have the background set to the Gnome logo with the 1 pixel transparent 
image over the top, stretched to the same size as the logo.

You need the transparent image over the top, or the browser doesn't make 
the area clickable.
