My Mum, in fact, is in her 60's and has been using laptop computers for
more than 10 years. She *still* has no idea what a "desktop environment"
is, although when I show her GNOME she can see it is "different."

GNOME is not special because it is anything technical. It's special
because of the possibilites we all can see in it. 

Millenia ago, I suggested the site be cloven in half: one side for
users, one side for developers. People looking for a technical
explanation can get it, everybody else gets image, images, and
imagination.
