This has already been denied in bugs like:
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=127175
Which references mails like:
http://mail.gnome.org/archives/gnome-doc-list/2003-December/msg00004.html
and the gnome docs style guides:
http://developer.gnome.org/documents/style-guide/units.html
For what its worth I very much agree with Patrick. The binary prefixes
are silly and nobody but anal-retentive ultra-geeks will understand
them, thus confusing the general userbase (who haven't seen them
before).
