gnome-vfs usage of GConf vs threads

The http method in gnome-vfs uses GConf to read proxy settings and some
other stuff. I think this may cause problems. These calls are gonna be
made from the gnome-vfs worker threads, and neither GConf nor ORBit2 are
threadsafe. This could cause random bugs and crashes.
Any idea what to do about this?
If we instantiate a separate GConfClient and lock about its usage, will at
least the gconf part be threadsafe?
