The Oxford Style Guide has the following entry for "trash": trash/ (US) refuse, rubbish; -can (US) = dust bin (two words) That's not particularly helpful, though, since not many of my files contain dust. I quite like "wastebasket": it seems friendlier to me than any of the other suggestions. I'm open to persuasion, though. Wasn't there a long discussion about this on some list a few months ago?
