Problems viewing Themes

I have added themes using the 'Add New Themes' button in Gnome's Control
Panel. I look in my home directory and there are the themes
un-tarballed. However, they do not show up on the themes list! Does
anybody have an idea why not? Can I tell the Themes Selector to point to
a particular themes directory?
