Theme difficulties

Hi, 

I have helix gnome installed on my Mandrake 7.0 system, and everything
works fine apart from the themes.  They work as root, but as a user I
cannot get a complete theme to work.  Either the whole theme does not
load, and all windows are brown, or some of the theme loads - but brown
bits still exist.

Any ideas what the problem might be?
