What kernel are you trying to compile? 2.4 kernels don't have ASLA
support unless you compile ALSA seperately and then load modules. 2.6 has
done away with the old Open Sound System in favor of ALSA. Are you trying
to compile a 2.6 kernel?
In addition, ALSA provides complete compatibility with the old OSS sound
system. Non-alsa apps work fine with ALSA. Perhaps yor alsa library
isn't compiled correctly?
