How to hide a user from the GDM login screen?

With Gnome 2, it was possible to set the UID to a value <1000, and the
matching user wasn't displayed in the GDM login screen. That doesn't
seem to work now. I added a new user changed it's UID from 1002 to 997,
but that user is still displayed in GDM.
How can I avoid that? How can I hide a user in Gnome 3?
