Depends on what you want to do.

You could write gnome shell extensions (_javascript_) if you want to contribute in that way (usually making some enhancement to gnome-shell that users can toggle on and off)[0].

Or you could fix bugs? There are some marked with the 'gnome-love' keyword that are meant to be suitable for beginners (there used to be a non-bugzilla page that listed more of these, but I don't know where it has gone). I *think* gnome-love bugs tend to be _javascript_, not sure. [1]
Or you could just browse the gnome-shell bugs? [2] (that link is not working for me)
