Sorry if I post this reply in a wrong place. It has been a long time
since I used mailing lists.

Anyway, I think that the big question is that what do users want. Do
users like gnome-shell way of doing things or do users prefer old
gnome-panel approach? Is there something that can be done to
gnome-shell to improve user acceptance? Statistical evidence should be
gathered about user opinions.

It would seem to me that easiest way would be to have a poll to find
out what majority of gnome users think. Perhaps most users do like
gnome-shell in which case developers are on the right track. Then
again, perhaps most users do not like gnome-shell and developers
should change direction and try to get the old gnome 2 experience
back.

How about utilizing the web page (or perhaps there are better services
in web to do this) to get statistical information about user's
opinions? Of course, the questions should be carefully crafted in
unbiased way.
