You also can set a key shortcut to switch to a specific workspace in the system settings. I use Super+<WorkspaceNumber> keys for example. I don't think a Gnome 2-like interface is needed to be efficient with G3 workspaces...

It *is* very easy to switch between workspaces in GNOME 3.

Ctrl-Alt-Down
Using the shift key you can even take application windows without.
