Are you sure this problem is related to GNOME3? I'd guess this is a
lower-level issue; if you boot to level 3 [no X] and connect the cable
does the machine still freeze?

I've not seen this issue. Do you see high CPU utilization? Any errors
in demsg? 32 or 64 bit? Kernel version?
