Gnome-Shell Progress

tried out the newest version, progresses nicely. Especially great - virtual desktops in vertical list in overview mode.

Some feeback:

* Right now it is only possible to move windows to new virtual desktops at the end of the list. Sometimes its nice to have a them in a new virtual desktop BEFORE or AFTER the CURRENT desktop instead of in the last desktop. * Having devilspie-ish functionality included would be nice. E.g. group windows in a virtual desktop and then save the arrangement for future use (a bunch of apps always together on the same - a new - desktop). The question also is: what happens to apps that are autostarted have windows open open all the time - rhythmbox, banshee, pidgin, skype, ...
Of course it should work somehow automagically (can't imagine how though).
* Nice to have: option to have virtual desktop list visible all the time in overview mode. * Nice to have: option to have virtual desktop list visible in normal mode (as autohided desktop list). * Alt-tab (window switching) is powerful, but is somewhat clumsy to use in combination with the cursor keys. I’d like to map alt-tab to capslock, which was not possible. * For overview mode it would be nice to maybe reuse something like kupfer, which has many additional plugins. Kupfer also allows to switch windows, which could inspire keyboard navigation for alt-tab (window switching). E.g. capslock key, type name of app or window to filter list, then navigate with cursor. * Changing between desktops with keyboard shortcut (CTRL-ALT-[UP,DOWN]) should show preview of virtual desktops (as in overview mode) instead of just symbolic icons with arrows in it.

Things i did not like:
* intel performance (GMA945, mac mini series 2) is still a disaster for high resolutions (1920×1200).
* performance when using search in overview mode is really bad.
=> In both cases it seems to be the animations that make for a laggy and uneasy experience. Maybe include an option to switch off most animations (e.g. when changing to overview mode)?

All in all: really nice progress.

eTM
