How to diagnose "Printer may not be connected?"

Every time I attempt to print to my home printer, I get a "Printer may
not be connected" message that pops up at the bottom of the monitor.
And then, it prints.  This happens every time I print, even if I print
things in close succession.

So, I am curious where these messages originate, and if anyone might
have some clues on how I could resolve this irritating, albeit minor,
problem.
