Installing gnome-shelll permenantly

hi I tried to install gnome_shell permanently on an account and it
didn't work
I did
gconftool-2 --set
/desktop/gnome/session/required_components/windowmanager --type string
gnome-shell
and I tried

gconftool-2 --set
/desktop/gnome/session/required_components/windowmanager --type string
/usr/bin/gnome-shell


no joy is there some way to set it up as a gdm session so it will appear
in the list of options on gdm???
