Is it possible that it has something to do with DISPLAY? Newer versions
of GLib have changed behaviour in GDesktopAppInfo#launch_uris()
regarding display settings:

Is anyone sucessfully running Gnome Shell on Ubuntu Jaunty with working
launching of documents and apps?
