Gnome Shell display white screen and blurred windows

Hi guys,

I am trying to get gnome-shell up and running and am having some trouble.  I get it to build properly without any problems.  But when I try replace metacity with gnome-shell the desktop turns white.  I can click on activities and each workspace will just be a white square.  Usually windows don't show or just show a drop shadow on the right and bottom border of the window but no contents.  Sometimes you can see the window content but it is badly distorted, almost like an incorrectly scaled image.

I tried making screencast but that doesn't seem to be working.

I am running Ubuntu Intrepid, I have compiz installed but stop it before launching gnome-shell.  I am running on an HP nx9420 with ATI x1600 graphics, using the restricted driver that ships with Ubuntu.

Are there any logs that I could attach to help diagnose the problem?

Thanks,
Stephen
