Porting applets to GNOME 2/Red Hat 8.0?

... and the main reason why we haven't switched to Red Hat 8.0 in our 
office environment is that we rely on some custom applets that hasn't been 
ported yet. Part of the problem is that I don't quite know how to do it, 
and the docs on developer.gnome.org doesn't help a lot. Is there a good 
applet porting guide or reference doc for the new API?
