Hi,
Is there any plan to add wifi power management to gnome power manager preferences ? For example, on battery turn on wifi power mgmt, equivalent to doing iwconfig wlan0 power on). Or should wifi power control be the business of networkmanager ?
These days linux mac80211 stack has a number of options for wifi power management, there is a power timeout, there is old style PS Poll and new APSD/UAPSD. These can be configured using ioctls or iw or iwconfig.
This will add at least a Watt of power savings (of course at the cost of thruput) as shown by powertop. Popular cards like Atheros and Intel already support power mgmt well.
I can sumbit a patch if anybody is interested.
Regards,
Satanand.
