[gpm] minimal dependencies?

Hi, I'm moving away from a full fledged gnome system to a lighter one using gnome for specific applications. I'd like to keep g-p-m but it doesn't seem to be functioning even though I have hal and dbus going. 

All the configuration files are in place in .gconf, .gnome, etc. 

Any ideas? Thanks in advance. -Dave
