I'm sorry it's proving such a hassle for you... :(

As I asked before: the above messages show 'disconnected'. The
normal sequence of messages is for 'connected' to appear when you
press hotsync, and for 'disconnected' to appear when the sync
completes, or it times out. If the 'disconnected' messages appear
as soon as you try to sync, that is a bad sign.

Points 2-6 look okay.

What failure messages do you get?
You can get more information from pilot-xfer by
setting the environment variables:
PILOT_DEBUG="DEV SLP CMP PADP NET SOCK"
	PILOT_DEBUG_LEVEL="DEBUG"
This output might shed some light on the level of the problem.
You could also try 'strace pilot-xfer -p /dev/ttyUSB0 -l'
which will produce a long output. Feel free to mail me
directly (this list has a maximum attachment size of 40k,
if I remember correctly).

Points 8-11 are irrelevant at this point, as point 7
is the heart of your problem.

... and this is important too!

I don't know the cause of your problem, but it seems likely
to be a problem with the USB / kernel system.

Is there an alternative kernel version you could boot, or
an update you could apply?

You mentioned that it used to work fine under Ubuntu Breezy.
It would be well worth trying to boot from that kernel.
Things change in the Linux kernel from release to release,
some of which can cause USB trouble, for example, and sometimes
only for particular USB hardware, which would be consistent
with the fact that many dapper users don't have problems now.

Are there any other messages from dmesg? It would be worth
posting all messages from when you press the hotsync button
to when the ttyUSB* devices disconnect.

Best regards,

Matt
