Can't connect to palm with ir port

Hello!

I can't connect to palm using infrared port. I'm trying to figure it out
for third day now and I think I won't made it without some help. Problem
may be that I don't really know how it all is supposed to work - ir port
seem to appear as ttyS2 but nothing seems to work on it as-is, then there
are some irda utils which map it to a network device, then there is
ircomm-tty kernel module which create /dev/ircomm* devices connected to
something... argh... sorry, I just want to say I'm totally puzzled and was
unable to find a general overview of how things are architected - each
howto or article just lists individual steps author thinks will help. But
without general knowledge about entire mechanism, if a step fails, I'm
left in the cold :-/

I have installed ir and pilot packages, and they work when connecting palm
using cradle, but not when using infrared port. Everything I try end up
with app waiting for Palm to communicate, and that's it. I tried
everything I could think of with jpilot and gpilotd.

I know that ir ports on laptop and palm work because when I bought laptop
there was WinXP installed and it detected palm connection just like that
and provided correct info about connection attempt, so I'm pretty sure
hardware is ok.

Below I'm pasting some info about current setup. I dont' know what
else could be useful but I'm eager to provide any info necessary.

If anyone could help me, I'd be very grateful.
