Just checked, it's all set to "Synchronize", and the PilotLink setting
in the Gnome Control Center is to "Use Conduit Settings".  I reopened
gnome-cal, none of my appointments are there, but they exist on the
Palm.

Where is the Gnome-cal data actually kept?  I notice the GnomeCC
doesn't give an option of a file, like it does for the address book &
memos fields.
