1: What USB options did you choose during the kernel compile?
2: Do you have /proc/bus/usb?
3: When you hit the sync button on the cradle, what shows up in
   /var/log/messages?

Don't know about the compile issues; the current helix packages are
working fine for me, so I'd suggest focusing your efforts there.
