visor and usb -- STILL not working

Here's what I have installed:

pilot-link-0.9.5-0mdk_helix_1
pilot-link-devel-0.9.5-0mdk_helix_1
gnome-pilot-0.1.55-0mdk_helix_1

gnome-pilot just does not see my visor.  I get to the part in the druid
where it wants me to hit the sync button, but it never connects to the
visor.  pilot-link works perfectly, as always, so it's not the hardware.

If I compile gnome-pilot myself from CVS, (yes, with
--enable-usb-visor=yes) it acts very strangely.  The panel icon is
enormous (maybe 128x128 or larger) and totally transparent, among other
broken behavior.

Is there anything I can to to help diagnose the problem with the visor
and USB, and does anyone know what am I doing wrong in the compilation?
