Hmmm, I don't use gnomecal at all but gpilotd works as long as I start it up
manually. Probably because I don't have the gnomecal conduit enabled.
I can start the applet on the panel manually once gpilotd is running, but I
don't know whether it would start up before or after the startup programs.
I would guess before, though :-(

That did the trick. I also noticed that I had to have the calendar app open
as well or it also died. I now have both gpilotd and gnomecal in my Startup
Programs list. With that configuration, everything works fine.
Can I still have the panel applet? I was wondering if that would start up
before or after the startup programs?
