Yes, I installed gnome into /opt/gnome2 as well.

rpmmacros will specify whatever value you set in your rpmmacros.

I have two rpmmacros files
~/.rpmmacrosG (for gnome-stuff) and ~/.rpmmacrosN (for stuff that should
go to /usr)

There absolutely is no problem with that.
