Running on openSUSE, in a qcow or qemu image, logging in to my user
account from GDM gives me a blank GDM background screen (dark grey)
with no visible controls (ie. the screen is simply repainted without
the top bar and user list). If I blindly click in the top right corner
I get the GDM suspend-reboot-shutdown menu but no other input option
except ctrl-alt-f2.

This is:

I still get this on openSUSE, launching qemu-kvm from the command line
or using the qcow image. It doesn't respond to Alt-F4. I'm able to
complete g-i-s and install and run jhbuild, but no gnome-shell on the
next login.

I don't have this issue on Fedora.

Ryan Lortie took a look at this, and it appears that after login, GDM
hangs without running anything as the user. It's the GDM background
with no user list and invisible top bar.
