GStreamer currently only supports SSA/ASS subs that are embedded in a
container (like Matroska). For best rendering results you need the
assrender plugin from gst-plugins-bad.

If your problem is that you can't add external .ssa files, this is the
bug to track: https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=625113

I think I had an almost-working patch somewhere, I'll try to dig it up
and finish it.
