Hello,
I was wondering if someone could give me some advice on how best to be able to contribute to Gnome? I actually manage a software team of C/C++ embedded developers in my profession. My team is responsible for portable gps devices. Some you know doubt have heard of. I really like to stay current on new technologies. So as a personal interest I enjoy developing software outside of work as well. I have a keen interest in learning new application frameworks. We frequently roll our own in the embedded world and there is much overlap sometimes in the desktop world.
What I find daunting is the pain of trying to build gnome from cvs. I have no really big desire to start some major application. Actually, I wouldn't mind a little low level work, assembly/drivers/kernel related stuff. My background is an electrical engineer and low level developer. I think I can answer my own original question in that I probably will look for an application that I use and have an idea on how to make a change for some feature/bug fix/etc. I am intrigued by mono and gtkmm. I tend to use more C++ and have dabbled in C# with the compact framework for example.
I speak Irish Gaelic and am fairly literate in it. But honestly, translation is not something I would like to do. Besides one should only translate into a native language. Irish is not my first language. I have been told that English is my first language, but some of my elementary school teachers my dispute that notion. For fun I write little apps in gtkmm that assist in teaching some aspect of Irish. But the apps I write are really more of a learning tool about gtkmm.
Anyway, Hi.
Sean
