I think Glade (http://glade.gnome.org/) would be the best place to
start. Just make sure you are using the version with gtk+2/gnome2
support, which I think is Glade 1.1.3.
Glade is a great user interface builder (no code editing) to help you
get something started. It will generate all the base code you
need for a
gnome2 project.
Generated C code from Glade is interesting as a toy, but be careful not to
actually use its code for anything useful.
People have recently considered removing code-generation from glade because
it leads to confusion/bad practices with beginners.
