I found a Gnome extension which might be able to do this:

I've installed it with the on/off-button at the top right corner. The
problem is, how do I open or activate this extension? When I type <ctrl>-
<some number>, like mentioned in the above page, nothing happens. Logging
out and in has no effect.

I've found it out. It only works in overlay mode (had to find out what
that is). It's only partially what I've been looking for. I don't want to
have to switch to overlay mode first, before I can switch worksspaces...
