Problem with hardwired HTTP_PROXY

opensuse 15.1
gnome 3.26.2

I recently started having difficulty with the squid proxy, particularly with
Chrome. Tracing the problem led to the environmental variable HTTP_PROXY being
set to <http://proxy1.sma.com:3128>. When the proxy worked, not a problem.
I have since removed all of the proxy settings, and set the proxy to Disabled.
HTTP_PROXY is still set to that URL.
By adding echo statements to ~/.profile and ~/.bashrc, I have come to the
conclusion that it is gnome startup that is setting that value.

Below "before" indicates the echo was at the beginning of the script. "After"
indicates the echo was at the end of the script.

When I logged into the account:
20191115-18:28:08 .profile - http_proxy before:
20191115-18:28:08 .bashrc - http_proxy before:
20191115-18:28:08 .profile - http_proxy after:
20191115-18:28:08 .bashrc - http_proxy before:
20191115-18:28:08 .profile - http_proxy before:
20191115-18:28:08 .profile - http_proxy after:

When a command window was opened:
20191115-18:28:15 .bashrc - http_proxy before: http://proxy1.sma.com:3128/

Can anyone suggest where to look to prevent HTTP_PROXY from being assigned a
value?
