Panel auto-hide

I've just discovered, kinda the hard way, that with the latest(?) GNOME 
panel auto-hide, you have to go to one of the corners of the screen to 
unhide a panel.  I find this a bit inconvenient--is there a way to 
revert to the older behaviour of just going to the top or bottom of the 
screen?  Or make the new behaviour an option?
