Gnome 2.28, Howto get Appearance to Read Themes in /usr/share/themes?

Guys,

	I have installed a number of themes in /usr/share/themes, but many are not 
shown in the 'Appearance' window. Is there some way to tell appearance to 
refresh its list? Thanks for any help you can provide.
