Setting Compiz as the default startup window manager ?!?

Hi; 

I want to set Compiz as my default startup window manager.  Putting
fusion-icon in startup menu causes Metacity to be started first then be
replaced by Compiz.

gconf-editor tells me under
'/desktop/gnome/applications/window_manager/current' that 
"Window manager to try first. This key has been deprecated since GNOME
2.12."

Is there an other key or means of making Compiz the default window
manager for Gnome?
