How can the Sun type 6 keyboard be added to the list of available keyboards in /usr/share/X11/xkb/rules

I am running Fedora 9 on a Sun w2100z that has a Sun type 6 usb
keyboard. The gnome sytem/preferences/hardware/keyboard does not show
any Sun keyboard.

However, /usr/share/X11/xkb/rules contains "sun" and "sun.xml" files
that appear to be exactly what is needed, but I can find no
documentation on how to add keyboards to the "base" files (which are
symlinked as "xorg") files, which is apparently where the keyboards are
obtained from for the GUI display / selection.

I tried adding entries to xorg.xml from sun.xml (adding a vendor
attribute since this is missing from sun.xml). Now I can see the Sun
keyboards in the gnome GUI, but it does not appear that this has done
anything useful because the extra keys on the left side of the keyboard
are still not functional.

So, does anyone know how to properly add a Sun Type 6 keyboard to gnome,
and secondly, why is it not there by default? The left key pad is quite
useful!

Thanks for any insight.
