OK, so I take it back. My proposed workaround (that I was so pleased
about) doesn't persist after a logout/login. <sigh>

What is interesting, however, is that I don't get the same problem on
a fresh Ubuntu 8.04. Time to take my problems to a suitable debian
list, methinks...
