If you are not using an X display which provides the XRENDER extension
(from reading its web page, I gather X-Win32 only has supported XRENDER
since the last release, the 8th) things are going to be slow.
If you are using an XRENDER-less X display, then (assuming you are using
relatively current versions of vte/g-t; I do not know what versions
RHEL4 provides...) you should try toggling the gconf
key /schemas/apps/gnome-terminal/profiles/Default/no_aa_without_render
