Associating archives automatically to archive manager ...

I want to have the Gnome Archive Manager fired up automatically with the
indicated file when I double-click on a tar, gz, zip or any other type of
archive file.

However, for some reason this has stopped working recently, e.g. a dialog
box is opened asking me to choose a program to run.

How can I fix this permanently?
